3. Unusual noises and smells
Add this one to the list of signs of a pest infestation too. Pests may give off certain detectable smells, but if you’re not an expert and you’ve never dealt with a pest issue before, chances are you may not know what to sniff for. We’ll try to describe those smells to you.
Mice tend to give off a musty odor reminiscent of urine, while their bigger counterparts are known to smell like ammonia. Cockroaches often leave behind an oily smell, and experts say bed bugs sometimes smell musty or sweet.
If these descriptions aren’t satisfying, just go by what your nose is telling you. If you smell something strange in your kitchen, crawl space, basement, or other area of your house, don’t ignore it. Chances are, something’s lurking around.
Small, strange noises also make the list of signs of a pest infestation. They tend to be heard, especially in the middle of the night when everybody’s sleeping and the house is quiet. Sounds of scurrying, squeaking, gnawing, or scratching all indicate you may have problems with rats or mice.
Large insects can also sometimes be audible if other sources of noise are eliminated, and they usually sound like white noise or a faint buzz.
