Crafty Captain is free to read. This page explains how the site is funded and what that does — and does not — change about what we publish.
How This Site Makes Money
1. Display Advertising
We show display advertising, primarily through Google AdSense and its partners. These ads are served automatically based on the advertising networks’ own targeting. We do not choose the individual adverts you see, and their presence next to an article is not an endorsement of the advertiser.
2. Affiliate Links
Some articles contain affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you — the price you pay is the same. Crafty Captain participates in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. Amazon and the Amazon logo are trademarks of Amazon.com, Inc., or its affiliates.
How to Identify Affiliate Links
Affiliate links point to a retailer’s product page. Where an article is built around products, we say so near the top. If you would rather not use them, search for the product directly — it costs you nothing either way and makes no difference to the advice.
Our Editorial Firewall
Advertising and editorial are kept separate. Advertisers cannot commission, review, approve or veto an article, cannot buy a mention or a recommendation, and are not told in advance what we are publishing. Nothing on this site is written in exchange for payment from the company being written about.
How We Evaluate What We Recommend
When we recommend something, the basis is its usefulness to makers and home DIYers — not what it pays. We prefer widely available options, we say when something has a drawback, and we are willing to say that the cheapest option is good enough.
FTC Compliance
This disclosure is made in line with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising (16 CFR Part 255), which require material connections between a publisher and a seller to be disclosed clearly.
