Cinnamon essential oil

We are used to cinnamon in its physical state since it is a great addition to dishes, be they savory or sweet, and the sticks are a must-have for some very good chai or mulled wine.

However, the essential oil is going to help you eliminate one of the most common pests in the home that also gives most people the heebie-jeebies: spiders.

These eight-legged crawlies are definitely an issue for a lot of households, but when you are living in a cold climate, they are definitely going to make a home out of your house.

The best way to get rid of them without having to expose your home to chemicals is to use cinnamon essential oil, and using it is going to be really easy.

You can easily fill a spray bottle with some cinnamon oil that you slightly dilute with olive oil, and you can spray it in the spaces where you have seen them hang out.

Likewise, you can soak cotton balls in this solution and place them near or into the points of entry that these creepy crawlies have been using.

Another great point about this essential oil and solution is that it is useful in repelling many other pests too!

You can use it on wasps, earwigs, bedbugs, and silverfish in the cold months as well!

And you can also use it in the warm months too! The smell of cinnamon is hated by many bugs, even the most determined.

You can use it for fruit flies and cockroaches too.

To prevent any of these pests from coming inside, you can also diffuse them around doors and windows or use the spay solution for easier handling.

Citronella essential oil

When it comes to the most popular bug-repelling candles, the citronella ones are unmatched. Yet, while they do work, the therapeutic-grade essential oil is even more powerful and potent.

Citronella is an essential oil that is best used for repelling mosquitoes, but it is also effective against ants, fleas, moths, and ticks. This is why a lot of repellent prayers smell like it too.

You can easily diffuse citronella oil in areas where these types of insects are swarming. The best thing about the oil is that you can also use it topically in order to deter mosquitoes from coming to feed on your blood.

One thing to remember if you want to use it on your skin is that you should never use it without diluting it, as it is super potent and can cause skin reactions easily.

The best way to dilute it is with high-quality carrier oil.

If you find that citronella oil is not as effective as you would want it to be against keeping bugs away, you can always mix it with some other oil to make your own concoction.

The best pairings are with lemon, ylang-ylang, and rosemary essential oils, mixed in equal parts with citronella and carrier oil!

For topical applications, a small spray bottle is the best way to go, though roller applicators also do a good job. Meanwhile, for bigger solutions for your home, you should go with a bigger spray bottle so you can use it easily and cover more ground.

Peppermint essential oil

If you want one essential oil that is going to definitely work, make sure you give peppermint essential oil a try.

It is one of those essential oils that is going to ward off a ton of bugs, and it can ensure that you keep your home from being visited by any crawly unwanted guests.

One thing to note and keep in mind about this essential oil is that you need to either dilute it with olive oil or fractionate it with coconut oil. You will usually get instructions for this with the oil.

If the one you are using does not come with these instructions, chances are you are not getting pure peppermint oil or one that is adulterated with fillers and chemical additives.

Once you have made your diluted solution, add it to a spray bottle and use it around windows and doors, along with any points of entry for the pests.

You should repeat this process twice a week in bug-heavy months and only once a month in cooler seasons when they are all dormant or dead.

Lavender essential oil

The king of essential oils is, no doubt, lavender oil. Not only is it the most commonly known, but it has a lot of applications that are going to be beneficial for your home.

It has been used for relaxation and helping people sleep for years, and the best news about it is that it is also a great bug repellent.

So if you have always loved the scent and have been using those moth-repellent packs, know that it can be used for more than those too.

The best way to use lavender oil as pest control is to mix it in a spray bottle with distilled water and a dash of rubbing alcohol or vodka. Do not worry about the alcohol; it is in a small amount and will evaporate fast.

This solution is best sprayed around windows and doors so that you can stop bugs from coming inside.

Like with most of the other essential oils on our list, you can also diffuse lavender oil to deter bugs from getting too cozy in your home; most hate the scent.

If you are among those people who are not the biggest fans of the smell of lavender, you can mix it up with orange oil. Not only will you sweeten the scent, but it will also enhance its properties.

Given how many applications lavender oils have around the home, you should definitely give it a try.

Sage Oil

If your main interest is to keep pests outside of your garden and home, then you should turn your attention to sage oil.

It is the best one if you have chiggers or think they may become an issue since it repels them and your home and patio can be safe from them.

The best way to achieve that is to diffuse a mixture of two parts sage oil and one part lemon oil in a diffuser on the patio, and your problems will soon be solved.

This method is the best if you want to keep bugs away from your outside living area without needing to use any harmful chemicals on the patio or yard.

Likewise, sage oil is great for keeping away fleas, ticks, and flies.

If you want to make sure you will have no issues with these insects, we recommend diffusing them in the spring months when the flies are hatching.

That way, you will not have to bother in the later months or have to deal with those sticky fly traps, which get gross pretty easily.
