A complicated, multistep entry can be a not-so-suitable home feature for seniors with mobility issues. Even a single step can make it hard for someone who uses a wheelchair or a cane.
Now, if you’re fine walking on your own, just think that you don’t really know if you’ll still be able to easily do that in your 70s or 80s. Aging can affect your mobility, leading to joint issues, muscle weakness, and other changes in your body that may require you to use a cane.
So, a home upgrade you may want to consider for your golden years is a zero-threshold entry. Basically, this type of entrance doesn’t have steps, streamlining the look of a space and minimizing the risk of injury.
If leveling out the front entrance isn’t possible, you may install a ramp that may be needed at some point for wheelchair access.
