It’s harder to put all those ideas together and create a space that is practical, comfortable, and enjoyable, but nothing is impossible, and I can teach you how to make that happen.

Don’t fret; I’ve included a few helpful hints and suggestions for improving the appearance of your bedroom’s decor. It’s nothing complicated, there are only a few basic principle designs that you’ll absolutely love, so give them a try.

1. Space

When deciding how to redesign your bedroom, the available square footage is one of the most important factors to consider, but many people forget about it. I’m sure your mind is full of amazing concepts and ideas, and it’s quite hard to stick to just one of them, but if there’s not enough space in your bedroom, too many items can make it look cramped and cluttered, and that’s definitely not a place where you’d want to relax.

Speaking of that, you should focus your attention on how effectively you can move about the floor area in your bedroom without feeling crowded or overwhelmed by too much stuff. This is one of the best methods to give the room a chill and pleasant atmosphere.

When your room is too crowded, you might have the impression that your mind can’t shut down, you can’t think properly, and you can’t get enough Zzzs in, which means that you’ll wake up feeling just as tired as you were when you went to sleep.

If you can do it, keep your bedroom free of unnecessary pieces of furniture like bookshelves and coffee tables (these are items that are perfect for a cozy and stylish living room), as well as those pesky bedside tables that will force you to crawl under the covers every night.

You can move extra furniture in your living room or in your attic and consider creative solutions, such as installing drawers beneath your bed to increase that much-needed storage space.

2. Colors

The color of your bedroom can impact you in ways you didn’t even think of. Imagine that you had a hard day at work, or maybe you’re tired from running after your grandkids in the park. You can’t wait to come home, unwind with a great dinner and a shower, change into your jammies, and get some quality shut-eye.

But your bedroom looks too colorful or too energetic, and instead of feeling sleepy, you actually want to get out of bed and watch TV. That’s a no-no, because you don’t want to be too energetic when it’s nighttime. You want to doze off and wake up rested the next day.

A beautiful bedroom should be a place of rest and relaxation, and the best color schemes for doing this are soft and subtle ones, such as those based on neutral hues like white, gray, and cream or light pastels like lavender, dusty pink, peach, and baby blue.

However, this doesn’t mean that your bedroom must be painted in a single shade, especially if you don’t like that. Instead, if you’re drawn to brighter hues (which are definitely pretty), try out some other color combinations to see what you like the most.

Experiment with a vibrant throw pillow, a printed duvet cover, a comforter, or bedspread, a wallpapered accent wall, or a paint color on a wall or ceiling. This way, your room will give off the impression of being cozy and relaxing, but it will also make you feel energized in the morning.

3. Lighting

The best way to illuminate your bedroom is to layer the lighting rather than relying on just 1 source of light (such as an overhead light or a table lamp – they look good, but they’re more likely to annoy you sooner or later).

The best thing about having multiple light sources that you can control independently or together is that you can enjoy a romantic atmosphere or have more light when you want to work on something from the comfort of your bed.

Think of the many basic light sources you already have in your bedroom (including natural light, ceiling lights, floor lamps, bedside lamps, table lamps, reading lights, pendant lights, dimmers, and sconces), and choose a couple to include in your lighting scheme to create the desired effect. Trust me, you’re going to love spending time in your bedroom if your lighting is set out right!

4. Furniture

You can tell whether your bedroom is too crowded by the amount of space stuff takes up (don’t forget about tip number 1). However, aesthetics also matter, especially if you want to feel cozy and relaxed when you enter your room.

A bed frame without a headboard, for example, would have a significantly smaller visual footprint than one with a large, hefty headboard. Believe me, I’m one of those people who like having huge headboards, but I know that my bedroom is not that big, so I can’t have exactly what I want. Consider the visual weight of each item of bedroom furniture when you make your choice and don’t forget about the real space you have.

Of course, you can make your room appear bigger with the help of decor items, but if you don’t have enough space, choosing a heavy headboard, for instance, will make your bedroom look crowded and tiny, and it will give off the impression that there’s no air there.

Light-colored beds and uncluttered nightstands are the best things ever for bedrooms with limited square footage, while a towering headboard or huge piece of wall art might help make the most of a master suite with high ceilings.

If you’re short on floor space, your bed might serve as a focal point rather than a special centerpiece, so make sure to choose one that fits your style and beautifully complements the whole design of your room.

If you’re looking for another way to give off the impression that your bedroom is huge and breezy, try putting some mirrors here and there. They can catch the light and create the illusion that you were blessed with a ton of space.

5. Ceiling

The ceiling is that one part of the room that many people typically forget about, despite the fact that it’s the largest, untouched surface in the room. They think that a good coat of white paint and a light bulb is enough to make the ceilings look good and classic, but experienced designers know how to take it up a notch.

An elegant ceiling painted or papered in a soft shade or pattern might be the finishing touch on a beautifully decorated bedroom. If you’re sick of DIY suggestions but still want a luxurious bedroom design, consider getting the ceiling molded. It will look stylish, classy, and very elegant.

The bed is the most basic and noticeable piece of furniture in any bedroom that exists. You probably don’t want your room to seem “harsh” when you look at the softness of your bed and then look at any other part. Soften the overall feel of your bedroom with some pretty window coverings, floor coverings, and accessories like blankets and throw pillows. Choose colors and styles that complement the overall look of your room, so that everything can blend together in a charming way that will make you feel happy and relaxed.

7. Nook

Many interior designers say that you should treat your bedroom like a sanctuary and I think that they’re right. If you’re searching for a method to add some extra coziness to the room you sleep in, a private nook is an excellent option if you have enough space for it.
