7 Important Must-Know DIYs for Every Homeowner

DIY

Whether you love to DIY or not, there are some of the ones you definitely need to know how to do!

Whether you are a DIY lover or you do not really dabble in it, as a homeowner you need to know how to do certain things around the house. After all, owning your own home is hard work, both in the sense that you will have to be able to buy it and also because the work doesn’t stop after you have bought it and paid off your mortgage. You will have to be able to do things around the house, whether you like it or are good at them or not!

This doesn’t mean that you have to be a DIY master, but rather that you need to know how to do certain things so you do not have to deal with paying for a professional every time, rely on friends or family for all the little things, or even just to prevent further damage to your home before you get someone advised to check and fix the problem. Sometimes it’s just the fact that you don’t want to pay someone else to do something that you can do yourself that motivates you to improve your DIY skills!

Either way, these things fall under the category of things you need to know how to do and fix so that you can keep your home in its best shape. Be it that you will always do them yourself or that you will know how to do them so that you do not get scammed by people overpricing simple things or that you can point out where they are not doing what they should!

Let us know in the comments below which of these DIYs you know how to do and which ones you hope to learn soon!

No.1 Installing wall shelves

This one may be something most of us learn after we leave for college, but you would be surprised by how many people do not know how to install some of these wall shelves. which is a shame considering just how versatile they are! You can have them in your closet, garage, office, and bedroom, just to mention some of the most common places people install them. After all, they are a great way to maximize storage space, and everyone should know how to do it.

It is more difficult than simply hanging a painting or photo frame, but it is still one of the beginner DIYs you should know and teach others in your family or small circle how to do safely. In the end, you will only need a few handy tools that you can get in any good tool kit, and the skills can be learned easily.

Not to mention, beyond hanging a shelf or even painting, you should make sure your screwdriver and hammering skills are up to date, as no matter what type of handyman project around the house it is, chances are the DIY will require these skills!

No.2 Fixing a clogged or running toilet

Be it that the toilet is just running or that it is actually clogged, it is such a common issue that you will have to face, whether you are a homeowner or not, that it is ideal for everyone to know how to fix it. Despite this, it is not a DIY that should scare you, as these two toilet-related DIYs are pretty easy, and even someone who has never done them before can easily figure them out.

If we are talking about a clogged toilet, if you have a good plunger and you know the right method to use, it should not take you more than a couple of minutes. If you have a running toilet, depending on how your water tank works and is operating, it can either be really easy or a bit complicated. But still, if you have a traditional tank, while it may take you a little bit of DIY-ing to open the tank and take it apart, it will not be hard, and you will be able to solve the easy issues pretty fast.

No.3 Wall painting

Wall painting is yet another one of those time-consuming DIY projects that you must be familiar with. After all, even if you are still renting, if you want to get that deposit back, it would be a great idea to know how to cover some of those marks on the walls.

Besides that, as a homeowner, you may have to add another layer of paint here and there around the house. And there is a bit more to it than just dipping your brush in paint and haphazardly adding color to the wall. You have to be careful about how thick the paint layer is; get to know the difference between painting with a roller and a paintbrush. Not to mention, your best friend should become painter’s tape in order to not paint over baseboards and other fixtures on the wall.

It isn’t that hard and is truly a DIY that every beginner can learn pretty quickly, but it will take some time and patience to get it done.

No.4 Furnace filters

If you just occasionally dabble in DIYs, you shouldn’t get involved in fixing any furnace or heater problems since those can get pretty complicated and dangerous. However, one DIY that every homeowner should know how to do is to replace their furnace filters! Because this is something you should do on a yearly basis, knowing how to do it yourself is preferable to having to pay someone to do it repeatedly.

The HVAC system in your home is super important, and keeping it in good shape will make sure that you have the appropriate temperature in your house—and, as a bonus, it will also keep the dust away!

If you are worrying about not having enough space to store things, this innovative way to make use of your doors is going to be a lifesaver!

No.5 Sealing drafts

Did you notice that some of your rooms seem a bit too hot or cold depending on the season, despite all the precautions you took to prevent them? If this is the case and you also sense a big difference in temperatures from one room to another, it may be the case that you have drafts in your home.

These pesky drafts will be racking up your heating or electricity bill, so sealing them is a great DIY skill to have as a homeowner.

Since they generally come from doors or windows, sealing them can be either easy or a bit trickier, but they are nothing you cannot handle. Some of the simpler options for eliminating drafts that you should be aware of or learn are: purchasing gap fillers, installing weatherstripping, and learning how to caulk gaps.

Simple and efficient, these are important DIYs to know!

No.6 Unclog your drain

Much like the clogged toilets we have spoken about earlier, clogged drains are also pretty common among homeowners, and if you have an older house, you know just how often they can happen. If you bought your home from someone else, it can also be a case of the previous owners not being careful with what they threw down the drain.

Truth be told, the origin of the drain doesn’t matter that much; it is much more important to know how to fix it. It will not only save you money and time when compared to calling a plumber, but it can also be as simple as using a special solution or a plumbing snake!

No.7 Faucet replacement

Having a leaky faucet can get annoying pretty quickly, and while it will not rack up your water bill, it is better to know how to get it fixed fast. Not to mention, learning how to replace one yourself is a great DIY skill for a homeowner, as if one breaks or you just want to change it, you will not have to pay a plumber to come to do it for you!

This is one of those skills that you should definitely have if you plan to redo your home or renovate your bathroom, kitchen, or even laundry room by yourself! In any case, it is always useful to know how to stop a faucet problem before it gets worse, and if you’re not sure, you can always call the plumber after you’ve tried to fix the leak yourself.

And since we are talking about things every homeowner should definitely know, here are all the signs you need to be on the lookout for if you think you have a leak in your house!
