And all of them are way affordable compared to all the scented candles you will find in the stores.

And don’t think it’s going to be complicated to make them on your own! No, no. We value our time as much as you do, which is why every single recipe we’ll share with you is going to be super easy to make. Simply combine your favorite fruits and spices in a pot to make the best homemade potpourri. Are you ready?

1. Cranberry and cinnamon stovetop potpourri

I always loved candles, especially during the winter when all I wanted to do was come home and relax. I love their potency and the way they make me feel, but most of them are so expensive that one day I would definitely try to make some homemade ones.

However, if you don’t like the scented candles for various reasons or you’re not willing to spend a significant amount of money on them, then you’re going to love this cranberry and cinnamon potpourri. This one is top-notch for the winter holidays!

How is it made? You need 3 cinnamon sticks, 2 medium-sized oranges, 1 cup of cranberries, 2 sprigs of rosemary, 2 teaspoons of nutmeg, and 3 teaspoons of ground clove. If you can already smell the smell just by reading, then you should definitely make it.

In a medium or small pot, combine all of the ingredients listed above. Fill the pot with water that covers all the fruits and bring it to a simmer. You can move the pot to different rooms in the house and reheat it about 3 days after it has simmered.

2. Bay leaves and licorice stovetop potpourri

Put 1 tablespoon of ground cloves, 2 to 3 star anise, which has a licorice-like aroma, 3 cinnamon sticks, 3 to 5 dried bay leaves, and the peel from 1 medium-sized orange in a small sauce saucepan. Add water until the pot is completely full. On a stove with extremely low heat, place the pot. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the pot to see when it’s going without water and replace it whenever needed.

Tip: The majority of the time, you already have the things you need to make homemade potpourri (also known as simmer pots) in your own house. Basically, if you have some oranges and cinnamon on hand, you have a quick and effective home deodorizer!

3. Pine simmering potpourri

This beautiful potpourri with pine twigs will be the ideal addition if you want to increase the “spirit” in your home during the holiday season. And you will need only a few ingredients that are pretty affordable as well! Put nutmeg, bay leaves, and those twigs in a kettle, add water, and then let it simmer.

For a potent fragrance, you can also include cinnamon. I personally believe that cinnamon and pine go great together during the holidays, but you are free to use any other spices that you like.

4. Cinnamon and orange slow cooker potpourri

Have you ever considered creating some divine potpourri in your slow cooker? If not, let me tell you how. Because it’s so simple and you need only four ingredients, you will want to remake it over and over again for every season. Pick 2 or 3 medium-sized oranges (quartered), 5 or 6 cinnamon sticks, 2 tablespoons of fresh cloves, and 2 cups of water, or more if you need it.

In a slow cooker, combine all of the ingredients, then turn the heat to high and leave it to boil without the lid. Check the mixture from time to time to see if it’s necessary to add more water. After it boiled for 30 minutes straight, minimize the heat.

5. Spiced coffee simmering potpourri

What else smells better than fresh coffee in the morning? I dare to bet that nothing else can beat this amazingly fresh smell! If you’re a fan of fresh roasted beans, then you’re going to love this potpourri recipe. What do you need? 1/4 cup of whole roasted coffee beans, 4 cinnamon sticks, 1 tbsp. of cardamom, 4 star anise, and 1 tbsp. of spices of your choice.

Put them in a pot and add water (2 or 3 glasses, depending on the size of your pot). Allow the mixture to boil for a couple of minutes. You must know that this potpourri is one of the best because, besides having a delightful smell, it can also cover the funky smells of cat litter or tobacco.

6. Pumpkin spice potpourri

If you love autumn as much as I do, then you will definitely enjoy making this amazingly delicious potpourri based on pumpkin. This recipe is pretty easy to make, which is why you don’t really need to be troubled with the measurements because I usually play around with the quantities.

You need: 2 cups of apple cider or apple juice, but if you don’t have any of them, you can just use water; 1/2 cup of canned pumpkin; 4 cinnamon sticks; 1 tablespoon of whole cloves; 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract (or 3–4 sticks, if you have them); and 1/2 cup of dried apple slices.

In the end, add all the ingredients mentioned in a pot or a small pan and stir until everything is well combined. After the mixture starts to boil, lower the heat and let it boil for one more hour. If you run out of liquid, you can always add 1 or 2 cups of water.

7. Lavender potpourri

What else smells better than a field full of lavender? Probably nothing. Its scent is fresh and clean, and besides that, it keeps all the moths away from your home. However, this potpourri recipe is so easy to make that you will adore it! You only need four main ingredients: dried lavender buds, some fresh rosemary, 2 cups of water, and 2 teaspoons of lemon extract.

Place everything in a large pan and let it simmer on the stove, adding water as needed.

8. Apple and ginger potpourri

The lack of strict instructions is one of the things I like the most about this recipe. Simply combine the ingredients in a large pot of water and simmer on low heat. You can use whatever you have in your pantry, from orange peels to apple slices to cloves to fresh ginger and cinnamon. You can make this potpourri around Christmas or on the first day of autumn. You can’t possibly fail with this recipe.

The ingredients that you need are: 2 medium-sized oranges, 1 sliced apple, 3 or 4 cinnamon sticks, 1 fresh ginger sliced in chunks, 1 teaspoon of whole cloves, 1/4 teaspoon of dried orange peel, and optional cardamom.

9. Floral scented potpourri

You should always conserve flowers when you receive them. Both the amazing last-minute surprise flowers you receive from your loved one and the ones you purchase on your own are included in this. Once the flowers have dried, you can use them to make simmering potpourri that is very fragrant and doesn’t require a lot of additional ingredients.

One cup of dried rose petals, half a cup of dried lavender, and a fourth of a cup of dried rosemary should be combined in a basin. Add an eighth teaspoon each of cinnamon and cloves, along with some dried petals and orange peels. Drops of rose or lavender oil can be added. Put all the ingredients in a pot, and then put it on your stove. Let it simmer with a small amount of heat until everything becomes crispy. Don’t forget about the water!
