What are the home trends you must avoid in 2024?
We all know that trends come and go, and (almost) every season something is changing, and suddenly what once was considered stylish and awesome quickly becomes outdated.
Because it’s time for the new year and new me stuff, in this article we will list all the things that deserve a bid farewell because not every item stands the test of time. Plus, sometimes it’s good for our mental health to make some big or small changes to our home.
From boring color palettes to huge and impractical furniture, join us on a journey to discover what home trends you must avoid in 2024 and embrace a less cluttered home ready to kick off the start of a new year!
1. Symmetrical furniture and decorations
Let go of that symmetry, because it is one of the first home trends you must avoid in 2024. Although superb balance and symmetry may easily fool the eyes, we should seek out methods to intentionally generate asymmetry. Some ideas include stacking old vacation photographs, putting lights that complement each other but aren’t the same, or choosing adorable plants and scattering them across the space.
If you have the necessary space in your rooms, go for big pot plants. Combine natural elements for a more boho effect while also being cozy! Let yourself be one with nature and opt for jute, wood, and cotton accessories.
2. Slim house columns
If you are lucky enough to live in a bigger house, you already know that the first impression is the most important. That’s why you have to make the outside of your nest as attractive as possible. 2024 trends state that houses with slender house columns appear antiquated. Adding more strength to your slender posts is a fantastic method to rapidly increase your home’s curb appeal! This makeover is worthwhile whether you want to change the outside of your house for sale or just to give it an overhaul.
3. Crisp white and gray color palettes
I bet a lot of you hated that gray all the designers recommended to bring to our walls even in 2023. Well, good news! Say goodbye to gray and crisp white palettes, because this is one of the home trends you must avoid in 2024.
Apparently, according to all interior designers, 2024 is the year when we must glow because colors are back, so if you want to paint your bedroom walls yellow, this is the perfect time to do it! However, if bright colors aren’t exactly your cup of tea, you can still opt for browns, beige, or earthy tones since they’ll also be in style in 2024.
You’re not 100% sure of the color you want to paint your walls? Don’t worry, because this paint sample color chart from Soto has 24 colors to pick from. It costs only $4.00. Worth a try!
4. Tile countertops
Due to their lower cost compared to many other countertop materials, tile countertops have become more popular recently. However, because of their vulnerability to scratching and grout stains, tile counters are difficult to maintain.
Instead, consider the pros and cons of various countertop materials, such as marble, laminate, and stainless steel. Get ready to also say goodbye to tile countertops because they’re one of the home trends you must avoid in 2024!
The good news is that your demands and budget may be met by a wide range of countertop selections. One of them is stainless steel, which is readily available on Amazon in a range of shapes and sizes to suit your needs.
5. Long and heavy drapery
Oh, for the days of voluminous, elaborate valances and draperies. Why did we ever think it was necessary to completely block out the natural light? Heavy drapes and valances that don’t work properly may give a space an obsolete, unpleasant vibe.
Luckily for us, interior designers say that long and heavy drapery is one of those home trends you must avoid in 2024 at all costs! Opt for airy and light drapery that allows the light to enter your windows much more easily.
With the help of these beauties, your rooms will be transformed into a formidable oasis. One of my go-to favorite curtains, which I also bought for my home, is this white sheer curtain for the living room with tiebacks, available on Amazon for just $23.99. If this doesn’t work for you, ditch the drapery completely and go for naked windows. Do this in small spaces!
6. Brass hardware
As far as accessories go, metallics may be fashionable but stay away from bright brass, which can make your kitchen look old. Instead, use stainless steel, glass, or brushed nickel to replace the cabinet hardware.
7. Matching furniture sets
Do you remember when everybody was completely mad about matching furniture? I hate it very much, so hearing that it will be a forgotten trend in 2024 just made me very happy! In 2024, matching sofas, coffee tables, end tables, TV stands, and recliners will no longer be available. Matching furniture, mostly because it’s easy to get in one location, like Ikea, might make decorating and purchasing easier, but it also creates an unwelcoming atmosphere.
If you can’t afford to replace the whole room, because I know it can be very expensive, try to decorate it with old and new furniture. I opt for pieces found at flea markets that are extremely nice and low-cost. It might be worth a try because you’ll be surprised by what you can find. It will also be a great opportunity for you to upgrade your negotiation skills too, because that helped me get the best price on the market for some pieces that were very expensive initially!
8. Over-the-range microwave
Woop, woop! Over-the-range microwaves are one of the home trends you must avoid in 2024. After all, who liked this trend anyway? While it could be a lifesaver for those with tiny kitchens, you can relocate your microwave to an integrated cubby beneath the countertop in its place. It could also be possible to put it directly above the counter, beneath the cabinets.
9. Hanging pot racks
Pot racks that hang from the ceiling have seen enough use. The preferred style for 2024 is more sleek with clean lines and those hanging racks might give the impression that your kitchen is congested and smaller than it actually is. Consider creating cabinet rollouts over a kitchen island as an alternative to installing a big pot rack over it.
10. Bold color appliances
The last of the home trends you must avoid in 2024 is buying appliances with bold colors. If these items were the real deal in the 70’s and 80’s, those years are way back now. Opt for neutral-colored appliances that are also easier to find, more affordable, and scratch-resistant.
