3. Get a Dog
Dogs are lovely, and they can turn into a loyal furry friend who’s always ready to protect you and your house. However, if you don’t have a dog yet or you don’t really want one, there’s still a way to pretend like you already have one. You can get an alarm system that sounds like barking dogs when it’s triggered. Crazy, isn’t it?
Would-be burglars will worry about coming across your canine friend and will leave your property before they can do any damage. Studies have shown that barking is a major deterrent to attempts to burglarize homes. That’s definitely a smart way to keep your home safe!
4. Keep Your Mail Picked Up
Another trick to keep your home safe without spending money on security systems has to do with your mail. If you’re planning to be gone for some time, ask a trusted neighbor to pick up your mail for you while you’re away. If they can, they should do that daily to give the impression that someone’s home.
You could also ask the post office to cancel newspaper subscriptions and hold your mail until you return. A mailbox full of uncollected mail is the first sign to a burglar that the owner’s not at home. But with an empty mailbox, your property draws less attention, helping you to keep your home safe.
